Tanacetum annuum, also known as Blue Tansy or Morrocan Tansy, is a member of the Asteraceae (formerly Compositae) botanical family.  It is a valuable essential oil used in aromatherapy and should not be confused with common Tansy oil (Tanacetum vulgare), which is high in thujone and is reported to be a neurotoxin.  Blue Tansy essential oil has a lovely, dark ink blue appearance that is due to its high chamazulene content.  Interestingly, chamazulene is not present in the plant itself. It is formed when the component matricin, which is present in the plant, is converted into it during the steam distillation process.  This oil oxidizes easily and should be stored in a cool, dark place, preferably a refrigerator. As it oxidizes it will change colors from blue, to green, to brown, due to the degradation of the chamazulene.  When this happens, it should no longer be used.

Blue Tansy has a sweet, slightly camphorus, almost apple-like scent and is commonly blended with oils like Helichrysum, Peppermint, and Lavender.  It is one of the oils that is popular all year long, but especially during the spring and fall seasons. It may also assist with the appearance of skin, when properly diluted and applied to the area of concern.

Usage ideas:

  • Add a few drops of essential oils to a diffuser, cotton round, or a tissue.

  • Dilute to 1% in your choice of carrier oils to make a face serum or body oil.  Apply a small amount to damp skin after washing to help seal in moisture.

  • Add 5-15 drops to 1 oz. of your choice of carrier oils to make a massage oil.

  • Mix a few drops with an unscented liquid soap or bubble bath and add to the tub when filling.

For convenience on the go…

  • Properly dilute with your choice of carrier oils in a roller bottle.

  • Add up to a total of 15 drops of essential oils to a personal aromatic inhaler (aroma stick).
